Control of Phytophthora blight and Pythium are extremely difficult (even with the use of fungicides) in the wet weather conditions. WebbPhytophthora infestans was first named Botrytis infestans by M. J. Berkeley in the 1840’s. In 1876, the pathogen was renamed by Anton de Bary to Phytophthora infestans (de Bary, 1876). The name is derived from the Greek: Phyto = plant, phthora = destroyer.
